Mary Sowerby began serving the dairy producers in the Northeast Florida Extension District as the Regional Specialized Dairy Agent in 2007. Raised on a dairy farm in New Jersey and active in 4-H as a youth, Mary received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Dairy Science at Virginia Tech and her Ph.D. in Animal Sciences (dairy management) from the University of Tennessee. Mary has previously worked in the dairy genetics industry, taught biology at community colleges and was the Central Florida Multi-County Dairy Agent for several years prior to moving to Suwannee County.
Mary has focused on dairy risk management, and dairy grazing management, while teaming up to research fly abatement strategies, improving winter and summer forages and dairy farm management methods. In addition, she advises the University of Florida Dairy Science Club, teaches Dairy Farm Evaluation to undergraduates and coaches the University of Florida Dairy Challenge teams. Mary also enjoys working with the Northeast District 4-H dairy project students, especially by coaching Dairy Quiz Bowl.
